A week in Belize - a round up!
We were a bit apprehensive about the border crossing from Mexico to Belize (we had heard lots of bad stories!), but actually it went ok. We got a local bus across the border and straight into Belize City, which was cheap, and the bus driver and conductor were really friendly and helpful. The bus was an old school bus, so the seats were very small and neither of us could fit our legs in!
Once we got into Belize lots of locals got on and off the bus at various intervals so it took quite a while and we were glad when we finally arrived in Belize City. From there we had a short walk to the ferry terminal, and caught the ferry to our first and only stop in Belize - Caye Caulker.
Caye Caulker is a small Carribean island off the coast of Belize, surrounded by a reef. The island is very small - you can walk everywhere and there are no cars. We spent a week here in a lovely bungalow on the beach, in a hotel which felt like pure luxury after some of the hostels we have stayed in - it had a pool, gym, private jetty, bar and we even had our own balcony with a seaview!
The vibe in Belize was very different to Mexico. It felt like as soon as we crossed the border the pace of life slowed, the streets were more colourful, and we could hear reggae music everywhere. We really liked the laid-back vibe and slower pace of life, just what we needed after a busy few months in Mexico!
We spent the week mostly relaxing, sunbathing, reading, chilling on our balcony, swimming, and wandering around the sandy ‘streets.’
We had some great Carribean food on the island - there was a BBQ set up on every corner here, and lots of delicious sea food, rice and beans, and burritos (yes, more burritos!).
On one of the days we went on a snorkel trip which was great, and the best snorkelling of our trip so far for marine life. We saw lots of fish, turtles, and sting rays, and got to swim with nurse sharks which was really cool but very scary as they were huge!
Belize round up: Total days: 7
Distance travelled: 220 milesToday trip distance: 7395 miles
Number of places stayed: 1
Number of planes: 0
Number of ferries: 1
Number of buses: 2
Highlights: - Snorkelling around the Mesoamerica reef, swimming with turtles, stingrays, and nurse sharks. We also got to feed some tarpons which was a fun experience (Google it to see what we mean - we didn’t get a video!), and saw some seahorses. - Swimming with a manatee - Belize is one of only four places in the world you can see manatees, and we were lucky to not only see one but also to get to hang out with her for a bit!
- The famous Caye Caulker cinnamon buns! Neither of us really like cinnamon buns, but these were something else! They were made fresh in the island bakery and we ate them most days.
- The huge burritos and fry jacks from Jenny’s cafe, we loved Jenny’s small shack and huge portions - we ended up going three times over the week.
- Eating lots of seafood! We enjoyed the BBQ’d seafood on the street, and eating lots of shrimps, fish, and rice and beans. After taco-fatigue in Mexico, the tasty food here was a welcome surprise.
