Highlights: - Hiking in the cloud forest in Monteverde, and walking across lots of suspension bridges
- The beautiful beaches of Montezuma
- Enjoying the natural beauty of the Chirripo National Park
- Spotting wildlife near the Corcovado National Park, and hiking on some off-the-beaten-track trails around the jungle-lined beaches of the Oso Peninsular.
- Exploring the Caribbean beaches of Costa Rica, and spending time in the Cahuita National Park
Reflections: We only spent 20 days in Costa Rica, because of how expensive it is we purposefully limited our time. However despite the short amount of time we had, we both really liked Costa Rica, and it’s one of only a few places we would like to go back to!
The wildlife and nature in Costa Rica was amazing, it truly was incredible to experience, and thankfully it is being well preserved. It was very expensive and touristic in places, and we didn’t like feeling exploited, especially knowing that the inflated prices for things weren’t benefitting the local people. We also didn’t like that we didn’t get any real sense of the local culture, everywhere was very Americanised.
One of the things we really struggled with was the terrible public transport, which was so slow, infrequent, and all routes go through the capital, San Jose. We worked out that out of the 20 days we spent in Costa Rica, 10 of them were spent on buses! If we did return to Costa Rica we would hire a car (even though it us super expensive!).
